It's illegal to stop on the hard shoulder except in an emergency, which does not include needing a wee. The reason is that the hard shoulder is a very dangerous place to be. You can take the risk if you want to, both of being prosecuted and of being wiped out by an errant truck, but I'd resign myself to a wet seat if I were you. Could be worse!

Well, I guess you should sit him on the potty before you leave. Even for adults, you may feel that you don't need to go to the loo but as soon as you sit down (works for chics) I bet something comes out. It is really dangerous to drive with a full bladder. Even a minor prang can result in serious abdominal injury because the seatbelt can cause your bladder to rupture. You've just gotta plan ahead and avoid being in such a situation because if the M62 is similar to a freeway, then there is no such thing as a safe place to pull over. I guess another option would be, if he is just out of nappies then for a long drive, just put a nappy on.

Yes of course. His bladder is tiny and fills quickly. Hes also learning his body signals but he will let go eventually no matter where you are, rather stop than have to clean the car!!
