Use colored electrical tape cut into strips. That's what I used.
UPDATE: Sorry, didn't see those additional details when I first answered. You have to get a tuner from a music store to find the right notes, play it by ear, or when I first started violin, my instructor would place them for me.

Lots of teachers use a product called Don't Fret Finger Position Markers
You can see it at www.violinstudent.com/beginner-fiddle
(Click http://www.violinstudent.com/beginner-fiddle if the link mechanism works). Go to the bottom of the page. These are made to fit all standard size violins, violas and cellos -- just be sure you are ordering the right size.

If you are not going to use a product like Don't Fret, I knew a teacher who used automotive pinstriping tape and was very pleased with the result. You can get it very, very thin, so there's not cutting involved. You will have to find the proper place on the fingerboard for the tape though. When the student had learned the positions for the fingers the tape peeled right off.

When I was learning, my teacher just marked the fingerboard with a pencil. The problem there is that you have to re-mark the fingerboard every so often since the graphite comes off on your fingers and you soon can't see the lines clearly.

Same as Anthony - finding the right place depends on your ear
