I always find it best to change up a bit of money- maybe a $100/$200 here, so that when you arrive in NY you can pay for cab/ train etc.
Other than that use your cash point card (but make sure you warn your bank first or they may leave you stranded with no funds- like my bank kindly did on one occassion).
If you are going shopping you may have problems using your cash card (my switch would only ever be accepted in Duane Reade) so ensure you withdraw enough to go shopping with, although I'd suggest credit cards are better for shopping (usually decent FX rate and more subtle than a wad of cash).
As for the rate... unlikely to change significantly enough to make a real difference so won't make a massive difference between now and the weekend really...

Take a small amount of cash, mostly traveller's cheques, and bring your card - just in case. I say this because you'll want to tip people and the best way is cash. You can cash in the cheques pretty much anywhere, and you're protected if they're lost. Bring the card in case you go crazy shopping. =)
Wait until right before you leave to change your money - the rate can change from day to day.

Get yourself a Nationwide Credit and Debit card. They have the best rate of exchange. Use your debit card at the airport to initially get cash out and the credit card in restaurants etc. There are hundreds of cash machines around NY and you won't have a problem at all. We have just come back from New York and found this by far the cheapest way. Small tip as well, the Taxi's have a flat rate of $45 to get anywhere in Manhatten and you don't have to wait long for one. But don't get one back into the airport, arrange a minibus at your hotel.

I'd take US$100 in cash to get yourself to the hotel, have dinner that evening, and breakfast the following morning. Once out there, I'd just use ATM cash card for cash withdrawals and credit card for purchases. If you're from the UK, apply for the cards from Nationwide as foreign transactions are commission free.

where are you from? and how much money do u have.
if it's less than 2 thousand, then don't bother using the traveler's cheques because you'll have to pay for every single cheque. just put it in your bank that uses Visa or Mastercard, then withdraw it from a New York bank that has that same service. U may be charged a little, but it's safe, easy and u don't have to worry where to put all those money.

I would take $400 cash, take your atm if you need to take out more, most work from the uk, use mainly your creditcard to pay for meals, attractions and clothes, when your in a bar pay cas, never use any cards, you ll get a shock when you check your creditcard bill!
travellers chqs are a pain to cash, your hotel would usually have a $100 dollar a day limit on cashing them.

Don't know where you're travelling from, also let me say I'm not in New York, but anywhere I travel in the world I just take my ATM card (erm.. cash point card) and credit cards, they're accepted everywhere these days.

Credit card - with a bit of luck, you'll save money as the exchange rate may change in your favour between using it and paying the bill.
