If we believe that God knows more than we know, then we have to believe that He answers our root problems but not always with the method we have in mind. For instance, perhaps you prayed very hard to get a specific position at a specific company...and you didn't get it. Perhaps it's because God has something better in mind for you...or maybe He knows that company isn't stable and you need something better.
Just as important is the idea of free will. He gave us an answer, but did we listen to it or just assume that was a bad answer and we went off on our own? The choice was ours.
Starvation and war are not in God's plan. That's the enemy's doing. As a world, we have to stand up to the enemy and fight evil wherever we find it. He distracts us with these issues so that we forget about his influence in our own lives.
He's not selective in answering prayers, He's selective in how He answers them so that He can improve your lot in life.

First, you need to be sincere in your prayers. Have faith that you will receive an answer and be receptive to the answer. I've found when praying for a specific thing, occasionally I don't feel that I'm getting the answer I'm looking for. This means to me that I'm asking for the wrong things and I need to think again about what I'm asking for. Keep in mind that sometimes the answer is "no."
When I look at situations in the world, I don't blame God for them. God gives us our free agency to make our own decisions on how we live our lives. This is His greatest gift to us. When bad things happen, they are due to the choices made by ourselves and others. If we can keep in mind the big picture and remember that this life on this earth is only a small part of our whole existence, then it is easier to accept the evil things that happen in the world.
Live in the world, but try not to live of the world.

The only observation I can make after some of the answers you've already received is that there's really not much point in being omnipotent if you've got to do whatever people tell you.
I suppose God's motives are God's own and the decision to answer prayers is based more on God's motives than ours.

God didn't put us here, in a world full of problems, to solve the problems for us. Some problems seem to be helped by prayer, others aren't. We have free will. We suffer. We can care about other people or not.
I pray before I fall asleep every night. I say a prayer and ask for some things to happen (like for Iraq to have a government that serves its people and keeps them safe without our troops)
and more personal/family or friend help. It helps me focus on what's important in my life. I also give thanks for being alive and fortunate.
I believe that God created us and lives through every moment of every existence. In other words, God is omniscient.

I do not believe in the God told in stories. I however, believe that there is an outer force. I don't understand why people put so much faith in things brought about by books and words. I pity this world, humanity is weak, stupid, and lazy. We are frankly, the inferior species of Earth. We don't deserve the exclusive rights that many believe 'God' has entrusted upon us.
My advise to you is to try your best for what you want/need. Even I sometimes let out a prayer, but we can't have too much faith. I can only say that if you manage to find peace in this world whether you are a successful billionaire or a starving orphan. You would be the luckiest person alive.

Some people (Not you..lol ) are looking for a Genie, rather than a God. We are meant to serve God, and not visa~versa.
However, He is honored when we put our faith in him, and expect AND ACCEPT the answer. As any good parent, God often says NO.
Lets say.. I take my dog to the vet. While at the vet, she is handled in ways that are painful, frightening, and make her very uncomfortable..She is taken from her master and put in a tiny kennel. There, she waits, while other dogs are screaming and yelping, and barking..Terrified..She is pulled out of the kennel, and handled by people she does not know or trust. Then she is put on a cold table and anesthetized. ..When she wakes up, she is in such pain as she has never known before, and there are those mean strangers handling her again..What a horrible trauma! ..When I pick her up at 4:30, after her being away from me longer than ever before, she is still so happy to see me..She pouts for a couple of days, and HATES going back to get stitches out..BUT, she still loves me and looks to me as her provider..(or God?)
There is no way that she could understand that what I did was for her own health..and just because I lover her..No understanding at all.
I believe that our God's ways are just that much above our own understanding. There is no way we can comprehend, as He is even higher in His understanding of things, as we are compared to our dogs.
Yet, even as our beloved pets keep trusting us, God is pleased when we, as His children, have the same kind of simple trust in Him..
.His plan will be fulfilled, no matter what we believe, or how we reason..
When He answers a simple request, He is simply showing us that He is still at work in our lives, and thereby we are blessed.by knowing His touch.

Sometimes not getting an answer is the best answer that he could give...by teaching us to make the best decision by doing what we believe God wants us to do and living our lives according to his plan. People are going to starve and die and bad things are going to happen... it's part of the cycle of life and death. He answers every question, every prayer.... but sometimes he just does it in his own way that we don't realize. Just keep praying... things will come to light. God bless you!

You might find "What the Bleep?" an interesting insight into the scientific reasoning for "prayers" being answered or not.
It delves into the process of consciousness explaining it through the quantum theory down to the string theory. I thought this was so interesting, I gave a copy to my pastor.

fate, my friend, fate. Same thing happens to me. Some certain things God wants us to suffer through, to teach us humiliation. try not to be so skeptical and things may work out. For some proof that he is listening, read a few true stories on www.whereangelswalk.com. Go to angel stories, and enjoy. (P.S. God works in mysterious ways. Your prayers may be actually answered very soon) Hang in there. God bless.

The good sisters told us this story when I was 7 years old:
A child, too short to see what is on the table, knows there's something shiny up there and wants it. They beg, they plead, they whine and cry, but the loving parent doesn't give them the shiny thing, because the parent -- who can see what is on the table -- knows that the shiny thing is a very sharp knife.
By all means, ask God for what you want. Remember to thank Him when He gives you what you asked for. But also remember to thank Him for *not* giving you what you asked for and protecting you from harm.
