Righteousness, in bible explanation is keeping and doing God's commandments...it may be vague what God's commandments are but once you study the bible, the principle it teaches will become clear.

Righteousness is measured by God alone, i think, because no matter what we do, we will still sin as this inclination has always been in us...but the bible called a few people as righteous (sometimes upright) even though they have sinned gravely before God. Aside from Jesus, (King) David would be a good example...becuase he desired Bathsheba, he killed her husband (By placing him in front of the troops during a battle). But despite this, God calls him righteous (he of course repented).

The thing is, we cannot be totally right in everything we do, but the persistence to become one is what counts...we are considered righteous if we continue to strive and be like God (qualities: forgiving, loving, merciful, compassionate).

Best example that I know is Jesus Christ, you know, that Jewish dude that died on a cross as a sacrifice for our sin/bad karma/screw-ups. He was totally righteous. The rest of us are just human and targets for the forces of darkness that attempt to destroy all the good in us.
