I am a perfectly healthy 22 year old except for the fact that I have a condition in my knee. Its caused by an enlarged patella (a part of the knee bone) which causes a tendon in my knee to partially tear constantly. It becomes extremely swollen and painful and reduces my range of motion during long periods of exercise. I can pretty much deal with the pain, but I heard this can keep people out the the service.

The only thing I can say is go down to the recruiter and ask. I see you have the chef outfit on your avitar if your interesting in cooking your best bet would be looking into the coast guard they are very short handed in that field as well as the navy I was a cullinary specialist for the Navy so if you have any questions reguarding that let me know. Hope all is well let me know how it goes

The enlarged patella will be a disqualification for your entry to the military service because being a soldier requires lots of physical activity.

no, of course not.

try this test and see what you think. load yourself down with 80-90 pounds of assorted bulky items, start by jumping off your garage roof, fully loaded, then go run for three to five miles, full on sprint over rough terrain. make it interesting, if you stumble, your brothers die. could you repeat this exercise three times today?

do yourself a favor, find you a nice young woman, marry her and move to a decent small town and have a couple of kids. do what you can to make a good life for your family, blow up your TV and don't read newspapers. you'll be much better off in the long run.

Yes

The military physical standard is that you be injury free; that's the bad news.

The good news could be if you seek medical help and correct your injury, wait tell it heals; than after that visit a recruiter about joining the military of your choice.

it would depend. i'm in the process of joining the military right now. i'm going for army reserve. i'm kinda in the same boat you are. i blew out my knee in 2002 while i was playing soccer. i haven't had to have any surgery or anything to correct it, but once in a blue moon i've got to wear a brace. somthing that i've had to do in order to get clearance for joining the army reserve, is i've had to go get a medical waver.

It might keep you out, but you wont know for sure till you go to MEPS and take the physical exam.
