An opportunistic infection is one caused by a pathogen (usually a type of bacteria or fungus) that naturally exists on the body or in the environment but does not cause disease under normal conditions.

Under certain conditions those pathogens can cause disease if as in athletes foot (a fungus), the feet are rubbed and constantly moist. That condition encourages the fungus to grow.

In yeast infections for women, the normal bacteria may be killed by antibiotics allowing the fungus to grow without competition.

Or the person's immune system is weakened by some other disease or infection (from a cold or flu to AIDS) or medication (immunosuppresants for organ transplant patients).
