I think mainly why a lot of firefighters have mustaches is because of the whole SCBA (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus) deal.

There are so many safety regulations saying that firefighters cannot grow facial hair in any area that will be in contact with the seal of the face mask. The reason behind that is because it keep the seal from setting good, and will allow in toxic gases into the mask which the firefighter can breath in. Mustaches do not really ever get anywhere near the face seal of the mask.

I also think that it has always been a long tradition of firefighters in differenent geographical regions to have mustaches. I remember as a kid when I would think about firefighters, I would always imagine one having a mustache, just because everyone of them I saw had a mustache.

Firefighters aren't allowed to grow facial hair other than a moustache because of the concern that the hair could compromise the seal of the SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus) on which the firefighter relies for breathable air while crawling around fighting fire.

My Dad is 52, and he has been on the police force for 27 years. I have never seen him without a moustache in my entire life. I suppose it's just part of his style, apart of him. He says he'll never shave it.

I'm honestly not sure if it has anything to do with being a cop, but maybe that's part of the reason.

Cops have 'em because it makes them appear more authoritative. I'm not sure about firemen. It's just their way. In some firehouses, they're not allowed to have moustaches because it interferes with the tight seal needed in using certain breathing apparatus'.

Maybe it isn't firefighters who have moustaches, but rather guys who like to have moustaches also like to become firefighters.

OMFG!!! I totally had a theory about this! OK I love the movie Ladder 49, and Robert Patrick had a mustache. And then I noticed that every fireman (even toys) of about 45 yrs or older has a mustache! So I asked one of them who is a friend, if when you hit 40... are you required to grow a mustache? I told him my theory... he thought awhile and then said "oh my God you're right!!!! We do all have mustaches!!!" Apparently he was as freaked out as me! lol

I think that this is purely coincidental. There is no prerequisite that firemen must have mustaches.
