Yes, it's called "dual booting". Once you place in the Vista CD, it'll ask you to upgrade or install a fresh copy. Install a fresh copy. Then, it will ask you pick a drive. You can choose the same drive, but choose a different directory. Or you can partition your drive (splitting one harddrive). Or get another harddrive.
Then, everytime you start up your computer, you will have to choose which OS you want to boot.

You can make a separate partition on the hard drive and install vista there. This is assuming that you buy the full version, and not the upgrade. Then boot from either OS. Will not be able to run at the same time though.

If you buy the upgrade, it will ask for your xp key as validation that you have that software. Once you activate vista, Microsoft will lock your xp key, and it will no longer be valid. ie You can no longer use the xp that you bought.

You can go to this link below on the Microsoft site where they explain in more detail. click on the "Vista product keys" thread.

i don't know if this works with both windows os, but i've tried this with windows and linux
upon installing the os, you're prompted by a question, asking which drive/partition you want your os to be saved right?
well, try dividing the drive space into two (or more) partitions
directions can be found there
then, install the xp on one partition, then the vista in the other
presto! your pc is a dual booting system! ^__^

It is simple....

1. First install the windowsXP , by default you might be running it.

2. Insert the vista DVD and while installation begins select the type

1. Upgrade
2. New installation

Choose the second one, and that s it.

Note : You must have high configuration for running both on a machine.

may be hardware or perchance BIOS correct. have you ever checked the motherboard forums to work out if others have had the challenge? perchance a BIOS replace may be functional (yet supplied that you hit upon postings describing an identical problem). My next idea should be to make sure the means provide is able to helping your configuration. perchance because the equipment is setting up, the equipment starts to attraction to extra means and it fluctuates and causes the hangup. If underpowered, the equipment can run somewhat hotter. After that, are you able to make sure that the factors are all seated properly? attempt to reseat the memory and video card and run by back. If that fails, may be time to the contact the motherboard supplier right away for help. Given you've tried with distinct drives and both IDE and SATA, i do not imagine it truly is a disk correct problem.

If you have pirated XP than please don't use Windows Vista because it will registered you computer on-line automatically to Microsoft Data bank to check the license number. If you have original Vista and have any pirated Microsoft products i.e. Office or Game it will give you message that you don't have original license. Within 1 month it will JAM your computer.
Hints. First check your hardware is compatible for Vista from Microsoft Web site link below

You need to partition your hard drive. Then you can install Vista on the new partition. You can't run both at the same time but it will ask you on startup which OS you want to load. Below is some info on partitioning. Good luck.

It is possible and you ask your vendor but you can run one OS at one time only. You can either login with XP or Vista at a time.
