I am a college student in Ohio, and the university turned off the fountains in our school's ponds. In the past they have been left on so the pond did not freeze. We have a small contigent of ducks that have stayed here for as long as I have been here. So, we have 20 or so ducks, and frozen ponds with temperatures nearing zero. At least two ducks have passed away this week, both are now literally frozen solid by the pond near our dormitory. A group of students want to do something to help them but we can't think of anything that won't get us in trouble i.e. bringing them into the dormitory. Some students have begun to feed the ducks daily in hopes to keep them going. I honestly don't know what to do to help them, but if you saw the frozen dead ducks, you would want to do something too.

Call the SPCA and they will come out and rescue the ducks-- in the meantime put makeshift shelters out there for them-- cardboard boxes with newspaper ripped up- and food, not bread, but seed. If the SPCA for some reason do not respond quickly enough- call the TV station as an anonymous call- if you have a cell phone with a camera take a pix and send it to them-- believe me they will be there before you even hang up the phone-- they love sympathy stories---and you may just get those fountains back on.......what a shame--- I can cry.......let us know if you save them, please!!!

just the stress of catching the ducks could be too much for them but you could feed them well and make sure that they have water to drink till things thaw out
go to a feed store and buy cracked corn or horse feed - that will provide some warmth
find something to hold some water so they can drink (this will have to be thawed and refilled at least twice a day)
those ducks sure will tank you!

Call your local newspaper and get a reporter out there (or TV station) That should draw some city wide attention and I bet something will be done about the situation. Negative publicity for your school will draw a lot of attention.

Yes, I can empathize - I would want to do something as well. Is there a wildlife rescue/sanctuary nearby that you can consult with? Also, if the ducks aren't able to survive on your campus, chances are they will find another more habitable place. Living in nature is rough, that's for sure!
