If you live in a brick home, this is the problem you will continue to face. Keep foods in tightly sealed containers. Vacuum your kitchen floors and counters after cooking and baking with sugar. Washing it before vacuuming only makes sugar water is corners of the counters and floors.
Also, ants cant get into the fridge so keep some things there if you can.
Seal off your open areas where ants can come in and this includes take the shelves out of the wall and cleaning back there.

Keep tidy the house specially the kitchen and food areas. Store sweet items in resealable containers or vessels. However in times where your food preparation or processing requires to let it stand for a while such as cakes removed from oven and requires to be inverted, then secure the legs of your table or desk by letting each table leg stand over plates filled with water mixed with a little amount of liquid soap. This is to break the water film of viscosity where tiny creatures like mosquitoes, ants, flys can land or walk on water. Those will sink and get drowned.
In some rural houses in the philippines, they apply floorwax often on their wooden and cement floors to deter mites, bugs, ants, roaches and other insects pestering the house.

I dont know how to keep them away from sweets, but to make sure the containers are covered tightly. But red ant-fire ants if they are in your yard and its summer- find their ant hill and a cheap way to get rid of them is to spray window cleaner on the hill- the ammonia in it kills them instantly! It really works-

Sit the bottom of the jar (or whatever the sweets are in) in a saucer of water.
The ants won't cross the water to get to the plate / container.

For goodness sake, DON'T use bug spray around your food. It will have a similar effect on your nervous system as it does the bugs, but of course much milder due to a much larger mass. Try the obvious, such as sealed zip line bags or better tupaware.

I've been told that white vinegar kills them. dampen a paper towel with vinegar and place it where the ant gather. It may stink up the room for a little bit, but eventually the smell will disappear.

Buy better quality jars and keep them properly closed in between uses.
Remove all traces of food crumbs or sugar in your cabinets/kitchen counters/floors.
