Whoa, I'm a Long Islander (Central Islip). Long Island is the main land and it is not 130 miles long because Queens and Brooklyn isn't apart of us. the Island is really 115 miles long. The Long Island South, is like a Very big and long bay. it has a little contect with Westchester. Long Island south also surrounds City Is.
On the south side of Long Island it's not called the Atlandtic Oc. it's called the Great South Bay. It's not so great during a storm(I've been in many!) I hope o answered your Question

Well, just going by the names, (I'm from Texas after all) I would guess that "Long Island" refers to the Island, while "Long Island Sound" is a body of water... I think it's probably between the island and the mainland. Just a hunch. Haven't pulled out any maps or anything.

To Ebonique and Uncle Ben. Long Island Sound is not the shore nor does it surround Long Island. On the south shore is the Atlantic Ocean. The girl from Texas, no name under her picture, is correct. It is the body of water north of Long Island, between L.I. and the eastern edge of the Bronx, Westchester County, NY and the south shore of Connecticut and Rhode Island.
