Bush has said several times the occupation isn't forever. So, and I base this on an earlier question, when would you end the occupation? Do you have a benchmark or trigger? Why that particular metric?

I would move out all military infantry and non-logistic personnel over the next six months. I would move a majority of those still serving their tour to Afghanistan to continue to fight and seek the real perpetrators of 911 and the rest would be deployed to "hot spots" were terrorism is believed to be accelerating. I would keep a logistic and intelligence personnel in Iraq for some time (to be determined by Iraq's willingness to fight for themselves). This would serve to counteract any insurgents trying to overthrow the Iraqi government and to keep tabs on Iran. I would not give any more money to the Maliki government until progress was being made (that's what the French did to America during the Revolutionary War).

Go to you local mercedes dealer and go by a brand new e class. Take it to the beach and drive it into a pool of quicksand.

Now. apply your question to that situation.

You can try for ever to get that car out but best case scenario is that you end up with a mercedes out of the sand that wont run. Worst case is you drown with the car.

I fear like 70% of the world that Iraq is now a lost cause. There was a period for about 6 months after the attack where there was to opportunity to savage peace yet minimum if any planning went into that part and secterianism filled the void.

I dont know if there is a solution anymore. say anoth three years and lose more soilders? get out now and admit a mistake? Neither choice is a very good one but only one saves lives of american servicemen.

Occupation of a country can be a long process. Realitstically, at this point I would'nt be surprised if they set up a military base there for the next decade or so.

I would *immediately* begin to implement the bipartisan Iraq Study Group's plan to move the American soldiers *out* of policing duties and keep some of them there for security and to train Iraqi soldiers. I would send home the soldiers who've been there the longest, and the National Guard, who weren't supposed to have to serve overseas in the first place (and certainly didn't when Bush joined the National Guard during the Vietnam War).

Just remember that it will not last forever.Who is to say it wont go on for a thousand years? I know it sounds crazy but will we see it end in our time? Bush never said we will.He said it wont go on forever.

When Bush, Congress and Military says it is over, and not until then. Bush is not the only one who makes this decision, even though many blame him for everything.
