i was wondering how the two differed because they obviously have differing views on idols. where as the christian idols are the cross,
the fish, the virgin mary and to some extent the bible, the hindus obviously have many more. i am looking for both hindu and christian perspective? how do th two differ and from the christian perspective what makes one right and the other wrong? my understanding is that both religions do not believe the actual symbol is god or somehow powerful but that these so called idols solidify the abstract concept that is religion. please share your thoughts, and also do christians believe that very good hindus who help many and devote their lives will burn in hell because they idol worship?

so i guess i doesnt come down to how many people you save or how much of your money you devote to charity or how compassionate you are but rather what you define as an idol

You don't want to know anything, you simply want to stir the pot up with your obvious slander against Christians. Christians don't have idols, we have symbols and we have examples of those who were Christ like or meant something to the church. There are many statues of past politicians or citizens but we would hardly call them idols. I won't speak for Hindus, but a multi armed elephant or the thought of a cow pissing on me, nahhhh!

I don't know much about the hindu religion, so I can't give you an answer there.....
I am a Christian though, so I can give you my thoughts on your question. I do not have any idols. An idol is something/someone that you give your attention too other than God, who is worthy of worship. This could be spending more time watching tv than worshipping God, it could be working hard and thinking constantly about purchasing a new car rather than spending time in God's house or God's Word.
I do not bow down, pray to, sing to an ithucus, the virgin mary or the Bible. I read my Bible, because that is God's Word and because that is how I learn about Him, history, how to deal with things/people, what I should and should not do. It is inspired by God. But I do not bow down to it, etc. So I'm not sure how you consider that worship??? I am, however, reminded of God when I see a picture of a cross. It's hard not to picture the story of Jesus horrible death when I see one. Just as when I see a flower growing I am reminded of the verse that tells me that we should not be concerned with our rainment (clothing) because God created the flowers in all their splendor and He loves us so He'll care for us. Or when I see a beautiful sunset, I'm reminded of the days of creation....because God made a beautiful word and we can still see the beauty of it if we look around. Also after seeing a rainbow, I'm reminded of the flood and Noah's Ark, the rainbow is a promise from God that He'll never again destroy the earth with a flood. So no, I do not consider this worship, and neither does God.

I see what your trying to say, none believers for years have been trying, to lump all religions into the same sack , like one is no different than the other, it would make none believers feel better to look at all religions like their just a bunch of silly superstitions especially Christians. if your so sure they are then, say were on a flight together an the plane suddenly takes a nose dive heading for the ocean, are you going to be calm an cool knowing your spending your last few moments, before passing into eternity, I don't think you would, you might even appreciate the fact that we all prayed, for all the passengers and crew to be saved .all the Christians on the plane that is, my meaning for this is, I don't believe their are true Atheist, at least not in the fox hole .

I dont think christians do idol worshipping as hindus. HIndus decorate the idols with flowers, and pray to it as if god is sitting before them, they say, take my sweets and eat them. They just personify god. While christians use it as symbol representing god.

Hindus are very good and old in idol worshipping. Now a days it idol worshipping is rather confined to hindu temples, due to busy life.

I dont think there is any wrong in idol worshipping as long as you have true devotion to god. Christians call it sin, because they feel that hindus are confining god to stones and trees. One has to be devoted to know the essence of idol worship. I mean as we say, one has to love to know the worth of love in life. Neither I am saying that only idol worship is true worship, it is to some extent confining the gods infinite nature. I think one can worship god as he feels comfortable. As hinduism says " God will appear to you as you imagine him to be". If you take image of lord krishna and say,he is true god, he is true god.

More over god is more than what christians and muslims think, God is every where, praying to stone is just proving its omni-present nature.

There were many devouted people, who made idol worship popular, they actually induced devotion into hinduism. Before that hinduism has not idol and people had only belief in god, without any image. Spirituality and devotion started with idol worship. I can say humanity and tolerance of hinduism has increased a lot after idol worship came into being.

I feel, free from passion and burden once i pray to idol rather than praying to invisible god.

If you have a kid and calls some stranger as "Father", can you with stand it. How bad you will feel. Same way,
God has said that " Do not worship any other god but me", because if God is the one who created us, can He tolerate if you go and worship something else?
I have felt our God's wonderful presence and He is so wonderful and mighty, I cannot express in words..
Jesus came to world to show us the love that God had for us. Find about Jesus to know the real God. I really assure you that you will not regret.

Sorry, I don't understand what you mean. An idol is something you bow down and worship. Granted in the Catholic church there is Mary worship and they pray to saints; that is not the entire Christian religion. We worship God and the way to God is by His son, period. The bible is God's word. We read it and believe it as such, we don't "worship" it, we worship the one true God.

Hindus do not worship the one true God, and there is only one way to God, by His son. Like anyone else who rejects Jesus as Lord, yes, they will go to hell if they die without confessing their sins and accepting Jesus as savior.

Hope that clears things up.
