My fiance recently won North Carolina's Non Commissioned Officer of the Quarter. He is a staff seargent in the Air Force. Does anyone know anything about the process of how the recipients are chosen? All they told us was that it was a "lengthy process" but does anyone know anymore specific details?

At what level did he win it?
Squadron?
Group?
Base?
MAJCOM?
Air Force?

I can tell you that his supervisor filled out an AF Form 1206 (Awards package) on him.

On that form he put something like 10 Outstanding Accomplishments, 5 Leadership Examples, and 3 Significant Self Improvement, statements from whatever quarter he won for. That 1206 is then given to whom ever is running the awards board. His package is weighed against all the NCO's in his Squadron who were submitted. The board consisted of SNCO's who selected his package as the best one. From there his package is forwarded to his Group Level. Where it will meet a board again, this time competing against everyone who was a squadron winner within his Group. The winner of that goes to the base level where all the winners at the Group level meet a board and the winning package moves on to the base level. so on and so forth.

Ask him if he won for the SQ or the Group. Of course the group level is more impressive, however it is a good bullet for him to have on his annual performance report that is filed in his personnel records.

Yes it is a length process, He has to win at Company Level, then Battalion, Brigade, then whatever next, Then Post then he would probably complete with others in that state. Sorry if terms aren't the same I"m Army

They would look at his record, he would probably gone before boards where they ask him question from A-Z on any subject from Air Force knowledge to government knowledge, to general combat knowledge, they would judge his appearance in his uniform, insure proper wear of ribbons and other decorations, the right hem line on his pants and sleeves. they would exam his hair cut was cut to proper standing, whether there was lent on his uniform, was his shoes spit shined almost mirror image if he sat at attention, whether his hands were moving, the time that it took to answer the question.. Did he address the board correctly. Was his salute correct, was his movements correct.
From the time he knock on the door and entry everything was under the panels review

Congratulation Job Well Done!

I know they are nominated by unit, reviewed & approved, & then they appear before a board. I know you can see the pictures in the Air Force magazine of their base & on the internet. A good loking group of men & women. It starts with the nomination & I know is it a huge honor & looks great on a resume whether for promotion, or out in the dark & dreary world of civilians. DOUBLE GOOD JOB!!!
