When he's in a bad mood or he's drunk, he tells me that he still loves me and that the only reason he's a jerk sometimes is because he's afraid of falling for me again (so what? i say). Then, when I ask him later about his feelings he takes back what he said earlier, telling me he has no feelings for me, or completely avoids discussing the topic. I'm really confused--I deserve better communication but I still love him with all of my heart and soul even after almost a year of being broken up. Is there any way I can find out what he really truly feels?

When he's drunk, it's not just a bunch of "OMG I love you!!" babble.. it's very true and detailed memories he shares and explains his thoughts well. Weird.

Sounds like he's messing with your feelings in a drunken sort of way. Some guys want to be wanted and so string you along - fan the flames occasionally - to get a quick ego boost even though they really don't want you (or don't think they do!)
Best not to play along - be casual, don't go around with him even if he begs, refuse to speak to him alone, flaunt someone new - and if he works out what he's missing he'll come running. If he doesn't you'll find the distance easier to handle with time - I know it's a cliche but time really does heal all. There's someone out there!

there are a few types of drunks.
1. the hatefull drunk. who yells, screams and tries to start a fight with everyone.
2. the happy drunk. who laughs and falls about, making fun of himself and all around humorous.
3. the love drunk. this is the worst one, he gets all emotional and tells everyone he loves them and all sorts of thing.
all three of these types will usually deny everything the next day, they always do, i know, i used to be like #2 drunk.
so dont put much faith in what he says when hes drunk, just ignore it and tell him to shut up or go away. but be carefull, sometimes a #3 drunk easily turns into a #1 drunk.

When drunk, there is some degree of vulnerability, thus he feels he can drop his guard about your previous relationship. This level of weakness is something you never can expect from him or anyone else when he is sober. When he is sober he cannot portray that image of weakness, coz he realizes "he's the man" so my dear, never take his word for a penny when he is drunk, discourage any sort of discussion about your relationship when he is in this state.

Well, being drunk lets a person's guard down, so those could be real feelings.. but being drunk also makes people want sex...

i think when pple are drunk talking about their feelings, ,then it is what they Really Feel, because drinking their guard is down but they arent being rational, but I think he is being sincere. When He is sober he is also being sincere, and rational. I think he is being honest with you all the way around.

A drunk man's words are a sober man's thoughts.
