you burn calories just by being alive. when you're sleeping you burn less than when you're awake but you're still burning calories. the amount that you burn has to do with your weight and body composition. lean muscle burns more calories than fat, so the more muscle you have the more calories you're burning even if you're not really doing anything (i.e. sleeping, watching t.v., sitting in class). the other thing to remember is that when you're physically pushing yourself you're going to burn more calories.

walking isnt reall exercise. Try running or lifting weights. Your body burns 2000 calories a day just doing normal things like walking and moving around.

actually, walking is excercise, you just have to do a lot of it for it to make any difference. but yeah, an average person will burn 2000 a day they say. but it'll depend a lot person to person based on metabolism and daily routines, among other stuff probably...
