I am against the other 2 answers. Go with windows xp Service Pack 2.

The reason being simple Vista is New. Remeber when XP was released.

It came with the same slogans

1. Better Speed.
2. More Secure.
3. Better Reliability.

But i remember systems crashing every other month if updates are not dont through windows update.

Then Windows XP SP1 is released which is some 100MB + in size. So it means 100 MB of code to fix the flaws in Windows XP.

So i would wait for Windows Vista upgrade till the same thing happens. SP1 for Vista released.

Definitely Windows XP service pack 2. It will be a long time before Vista is up to date security wise and it's going to need a ton of patches for gigantic security flaws that they released it with. I wouldn't use Vista for quite some time yet until they've got it in halfway decent shape. The dude that said Vista was way better obviously doesn't know what he's talking about.
