Whenever I use that word I am told that it is offensive, when I asked why it was offensive I was told that its because it sounds too much like the f-word, and is commonly used in place of the f-word when someone such as a parent is around.

I hope not. I use it all the time and I don't use other cuss words. It's sort of my way of expressing myself emphatically without actually using the bad words. I use it pretty infrequently, but darn it!...sometimes you just have to let it out!! :)
Sometimes I get a bit of a double-take or a comment about it, but then I explain myself.

Yes. It is clearly a replacement for ******* and everyone knows that.
You can remove "frickin" from any sentence and not lose any meaning.

It's a bit of an in-between; much less strong than 'f*cking' but still it's pretty obvious what you mean. So don't use anything like it in a formal situation but in more informal situations it's cool.

It's considered less offensive. It is basically replacing the offensive word. You're not saying the offensive word, but you mean the same.
