Of course Geppetto is in hell--his only child is lost out in the vast, dangerous world. But he is not being punished, unless it's because his goodness was not enough to tame his son's incorrigibility. Pinocchio was the sort who would have to learn his lessons the hard way. And after all his misadventures, he finally came face to face with the consequences of his actions, which swallowed him whole (literally). In that darkest of dark places Pinocchio saw the light--which turned out to be a candle held by his father, who'd spent two years in the belly of the Great Shark (in the original story). In the depths of their mutual despair, Pinocchio and Geppetto sought a way out of hell together. By saving his devoted father, Pinocchio proved that he was, after all, a loving being. He is redeemed by love, transformed into a true person.
