I have a friend who lost a close family member and I'm not sure what biblical verse to use besides Psalm 23 to give him comfort and encouragement in this difficult time. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. God bless you.

Isaiah 57:1 was proven good for comfort

1 The righteous perisheth, and no man layeth it to heart: and merciful men are taken away, none considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil to come.

I pray that God will send your friend the comfort and peace in knowing that He will draw nigh unto them that draw nigh unto Him. Psalm 46 is a good chapter to read in times of sadness. God is good all the time and He does not make any mistakes. God bless you and your friend and his family.

John 11:25-26 (NLT)
Jesus told her, "I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die like everyone else, will live again. [26] They are given eternal life for believing in me and will never perish. Do you believe this, Martha?"

1 Thes. 4:13-14 (NLT)
And now, brothers and sisters, I want you to know what will happen to the Christians who have died so you will not be full of sorrow like people who have no hope. [14] For since we believe that Jesus died and was raised to life again, we also believe that when Jesus comes, God will bring back with Jesus all the Christians who have died.

John 14:1 "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God ; trust also in me."

John 16:33 "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."

I'm not a christian, but I can tell you what I told my inlaws. My mother in law died suddenly of a stroke in her sleep. She was found just as it happened and went from shock to coma to death. Everyone started to freak out, and I was married at the time. She had diabetes, and it did a real number on her body. She was always in pain, even laying down she would cry from the pain and could barely walk. So, I told him whatever came naturally. I told him she was in a better place. Her pain was gone. She was a good person so she's smiling down at you from heaven. She wouldn't want you to cry. She'd yell at you for it. She wouldn't want you to make a big fuss over it. (That's the way she was). She would want you to pay attention to the family and take care of it, and to not live life in the "what could have been" state. It's ok to cry, but don't let it consume you. That seemed to work until she was carried off to be buried (We were in Pakistan and they do things WAAAAAYYYY differently over there). When she was carried off, both he and my sister in law collapsed out of grief and everyone was around them trying to get them to stand up and comfort them. They were very very close to her and just couldn't handle it.

Psalm 23
The LORD is my shepherd,
I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside quiet waters.
He restores my soul;
He guides me in the paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I fear no evil, for You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You have anointed my head with oil;
My cup overflows.
Surely goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life,
And I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever
