I know someone who can speak: Vietnamese, Chinese, English, French, Dutch, German. Her parents are Vietnamese & Chinese/Hong Kong, she lives in Belgium and learned Dutch/Flemish while growing up and had to learn French in high school and learned German from her cousin and watching German tv. Oh and she's supersmart.

Yes, and there are people who can speak much more than six languages. I remember a janitor at a school I used to go to could speak at least a dozen languages to some degree.

My sister fluently speaks English (native launguage), Spanish, French, Italian, Portugesse, and Africanas (bastard launguage based on French). She also can converse in Russian and Korean. She works as a UN translator.

There are also Indonesian maids. The primary reason why Filipina maids are more common is that employers sometimes have this specific job requirement that the maid MUST be FILIPINA. Most Filipinas are trained at a young age to do household chores, and can speak/understand english.

my friend's mom, she was born to viet and chinese parents, so she learned Chinese (3 dialects, teochew, mandarin, cantonese), and vietnamese, when the revolution in china started she escaped to thai and cambodia, worked a couple of years there, then flew to germany (relatives there), spent a few years there, and then came to america a couple of years ago.
