The old toy cars I remember from my youth (a good while ago) had a fifth wheel sideways mounted behind the front wheels and just high enough that it did not normally touch the surface. Not very obvious to the casual observer. When the front wheels went over the edge, the other wheel turned the car sideways. Then the front wheels were back on the table and the car returned to normal. Cute idea.

Had one as a kid that worked using a drop down arm which held the front wheel. The drop down arm was a gear shifter which placed the car in reverse, The front wheel was mounted so it would pivot. When the car traveled forward the wheel was pivoted so\uch that the car travled straight, When the car backed up the front wheel would pivot and turn the car as it backed up. As it backed away from the edge the front wheel on the drop arm would raise back into position and the car would shift in to forward.

There was a slight delay in shifting when raising the drop arm and near instant stopping as the drop arm lowered at the table edge.
