My dog got her shots 5 days ago. This is the first time she has had the lymes vaccine. Two days after this she started acting strange. Sort of disoriented, stares into space, separation anxiety, certainly not herself. She has always been a healthy dog...mentally and physically. I'm so worried that I should not have let her get this vaccine and it has hurt her. Any help will be appreciated so much.

I have never heard of this type of reaction to any vaccine, although some dogs will have allergic reactions to Lymes but those symptoms are facial swelling, itching, welts and vomiting. If this behavior continues, you may want to consult a vet neurologist, perhaps they are having some sort of seizure activity.

Hi Layla!!
Neurologic symptoms are the most common vaccine reaction seen in dogs. Canine distemper vaccination is the most common cause of neurologic disease, and can cause an inflammation of the brain.

If your dog has an Neurologic symptoms after a vaccination, seek emergency veterinary assistance immediately.

None of the 27 veterinary colleges in the U.S. recommend vaccinating for Lymes disease. If your pet is never going to play in the woods or in areas that have ticks, this vaccine is not necessary. You needed was discuss the odds that it will develop disease with your veterinarian before deciding to use this vaccine.

Many normal dogs have positive antibody titers to Borrelia burgdorferi. These dogs have been exposed but do not show evidence of illness. When a seropositive dog does have clinical signs of illness, it is thus difficult to determine whether the signs can be attributed to Lyme disease. I currently recommend monthly application of fipronil or an amitraz collar, to kill ticks before they attach and obtain a blood meal. Without such a meal, ticks cannot transmit organisms or lay viable eggs.

All of my dogs are vaccinated for Lymes disease and I have never had any problems with it. The only trouble that I have had is that they will sometimes act a little sick for a day or two and that they can get a bump where they received the vaccinations. I would call your vet and ask them, and you may also want to call the maker of the vaccination (the vet can tell you who).

My Maltese had an allergic reaction. Her little face swelled and she was dis oriented and vomiting. I took her back to the vet and they gave her a shot. Small dogs need to take the vaccines in increments. Like 1 now and another in a week or so. Scared me so bad, but she was fine after they countered it. Good luck to you and the pooch.
