Why, why, why do the answers always point to heavier-than-air aircrafts?

I'd say Jeanne Labrosse for her balloon solo in 1798. Followed by Madeleine Sophie Blanchard in 1805 (also happens to be the first woman victim of this science).

As for heavier than air, Madame Therese Peltier is the first female solo flyer in 1908.

And Buford (Answerer above) correctly stated that Madame La Baronne de Laroche is the first LICENSED aero pilot!
