It is population control. Just because your dog is a male does not mean he could not play a part in an unwanted litter.
Sterilizing a male dog before they are sexually mature does not make a dog a "mean". It minimizes the risk of testicular and prostate cancer, altered male dogs are less likely to wander off to find a girlfriend, pick a fight. Altering can also reduce undesirable behaviors such as urine marking, running, and mounting.
Do yourself and your dog a favor and get him neutered. There are already too many animals in this world who do not have homes. We certainly do not need to add to this problem

No they don't get mean afterward, if anything it helps calm them down !! because they don't have the need to go off running away to look for a female either ! Which your dog has already done most likely !! And it keeps a male from spraying all over your house too !! Cause they will spray everywere if not fixed !!

If they aren't breeding dogs they need to be fixed for their own sanity. ( Also has been known to help in prostate problems for male dogs) You may not smell or see a female dog in heat, but I know your dog can smell her and headed straight in that direction, it may have been days or weeks. But male dogs need to be fixed. When they are not breeding dogs, the scent of a female in heat can cause aggression, much restlessness and what seems nervous energy in your male dog, you need to walk them on a leash a lot to keep them from driving you nuts, but think of it as if it is you and you have an unquestionable need and I do mean NEED to each chocolate! But you CAN"T HAVE IT, wouldn't you bolt at the first chance to have it when it is being waved in front of your super smelling sensitive nose, just to get a taste????!
They do not all get mean after words, in fact if you read the book below, it actually calms them some, I did not say all down, but for the most part it is good for their wellbeing.

As a responsible owner of a male dog you get them de-sexed so they do not mate to another dog which will most likely create a pregancy of unwanted puppies which adds to the hundred of thousands of dogs that are put to sleep in pounds and shelters ever year.
However as a responsible dog owner you would never let your dog have the opportunity of mating with another dog would you now?
No, they do not get mean afterwards. Go and speak with your vet. You can get an implant that lasts for year if youc an't afford desexing.

Neutered dogs do not get mean afterwards. A male dog can smell a female in heat from miles away and will follow that odor to its source, many times losing their way home. Male dogs are can also contract testicular cancer which means they neutered anyway.

I have heard a rumor that altered dogs are more likely to be aggressive towards an intact male. Personally, though, I've never seen this happen. The neutered dogs I've had and known have been sweet loyal gentlemen who got along fine with other dogs. It takes their mind off, ahem, more serious matters.
The use of fixing them, as many have said, is to help prevent unneeded pregnancies of female dogs around your own dog, and to prevent several health problems of intact dogs.
It is also a rumor that an altered dog will gain weight. Well, they might have a little less nervous energy, but just keep their activity level up and their food moderated, and your dog won't be a fat slob.

Actually, fixing a male dog is supposed to help calm them down; of course, I think it's supposed to be done fairly early, like before they realize what those are there for...it also helps keep them from running off every time they smell a girl in the neighborhood and helps cut down on unwanted pups that get taken to the pound and have to be euthanized.

It calms them down, less likely to spray, and they get along with other animals much better. They get nice not mean, the only problem is that they can become overweight so you might want to watch there diet. Also it will save on having so many unwanted animals, him not being able to get another dog pregnet means no more babies. Thank you for getting him fixed if you decide to :)

There is a use, which everyone else who posted stated quite clearly. As for getting mean afterwards....that is entirely false. You want to see aggressive and mean....watch an unneutered male in a situation with a female in heat and another unneutered male. If you have a dog....please get it fixed!

First of all, they DO NOT get mean. That is so untrue..........
Second of all, when they are not neutered and they get the scent of a female in heat, they run to find her. They get lost some times and you never see them again.
Third, if they are not neutered they can develop problems such as testicle cancer and other tumors.
Fourth, it calms them down. They are not as hyper because their male hormones don't exist to make them sexually excited.
All animals should be spayed/neutered. It is the responsible thing that a pet owner should do. Look at all the unwanted dogs and cats that are destroyed and/or abused every single day.
Please do your dog and yourself a favor and get him neutered as soon as you can.
