We had someone here just a couple of days ago who asked the opposite of this question. He got a 2 GB card and put it in a card that only specified 1 GB. When he formatted the card, the camera told him that he only had 1 GB to use on the card. This supports the idea that you can USE the card, but you can only store 1 GB of photos on it. That's a lot of photos, though...
I would say to go ahead and get 2 GB, since they only cost about $10-20 more than 1 GB and then when you upgrade your camera, you won't need to run out and buy a new card. Just reformat your 2 GB card and you'll be ready to go.

Well it says you can only have up to 1 Gb of memory at a time. So im guessing that with a 2 gig card it probably wont work. But i dont see why it wouldnt. Stick it in and try it. Its just an SD card.

Not entirely sure. The specs say upto 1GB. You may be able to use 1GB of the memory on the card, but that might be all the camera is capable of addressing OR the camera may simply refuse the card OR it may allow you to use the 2gigs with no problem.
Probably the first choice though...

The camera use card reader to read the SD card. Probably the chip that control the reader was old one. which can only read max 1gb.
You might know why professional digital camera all use CF. This is actually because at one point SD capacity was stuck at 1GB (which probably the time your camera lineup produced)

probably the camera would detect ur sd card as ONLY 1 GB instead of 2GB
