Both are nice motors but I would take a merc. They're so common and parts are easier to get in my experience. I would take a Volvo Penta over them both.

If I had to buy a new motor I would go with the Evinrude 2 stroke........it requires no break-in and you do not have the scheduled maintenance required with the 4 strokes. The maintenance schedule on the 4 strokes adds up to a lot of lost time on the water. I have an older Evinrude right now and I have no complaints but like the person said above.......if you take care of it and follow the maintenance schedule it should last a long time.

My dad has a Mercury and I have an Evinrude and with proper maintenance they both work fine. Follow the schedule in the owners manual and either will last for many years.

it depends on your application, and if you want 2 or 4 stroke
while i've always been a merc. person, i'd have to recommend the evinrude e-tec. i was so impressed with it's performance that i'm still considering getting one myself.
that e-tec starts up on half a crank, and accelerates faster than any 4 stroke and has way better efficiency than any 2 stroke.
