There are a variety of medications that can help, but you should see an orthopedic surgeon or a general practitioner first. You could try an anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen. Ask the pharmacist about interactions or side affects. They are usually more knowledgable than md's about meds. Alternating heat and cold packs 30 minutes every two hours or so is also a good home remedy. Good luck

My doctor has me take IBProufen - it's an anti-inflammatory so it helps with swelling as well as pain. I had major knee surgery twice on my right knee, knee pain is no fun. Also use ice or heat depending on which makes your knee feel better. Most of the time it's ice but sometimes a heat pack can be soothing. I'd definitely get to a doctor ASAP though, especially if you can feel it moving around, it is probably causing more damage. Good luck!

It sounds to me like you have what i had "recurrent subluxation of the patella" or a dislocated kneecap. i dislocated my 6 yrs ago and had pain that increased since then i just got the problem fixed a month ago by having a lateral release; which is where they go in an cut your vastus lateralis (muscle) and it releases to pull your knee back into place...i still have pain but only bc im recovering. if yours isnt severe enough for surgery the orthopedic doctor will recommend quad strengthening bc your once your quads are strong enough they will pull your knee cap back into place and keep it there...as for pain reliever..try tylenol, advil or aleve if its really bad go to your doctor and get a steroid shot it will get injected right into the muscle, the bad thing is the shot only lasts for 3 months! hope that i helped and good luck!

Goodness that sounds painful. My husband has problems like yours and what he has found to help the most is to wrap it with a knee brace to stabilze it when you have to walk on it. Try to elavate your leg, apply an icebag for 20 minutes remove it and replay in about 15 minutes. (to much time causes tissue damage) Take some Advil. I hope you feel better soon.

My knee cap would slide over, so I went through physical therapy and it helped a lot I haven't had a problem since. They taped my knee into place too. As for medicine you may actually want to try a glucosamine or Chondriton supplement.

is this from an old injury or anything like that? Tai chi chuan (specifically SunStyle) is extremely beneficial for knees. The arthritis foundation supports, and i believe helps fund some, programs in the US. look around on www.taichiproductions.com
