Even though they are brothers, one has a very thick coat that matts easily. They are almost 5 years old and have always been together. They do nothing but hiss and growl at each other. help is this normal in this situation?

Now, the one has a strange smell from where ever you got him shaved...give both cat nip...it's normal, mine fight when one comes back from the vet...now they go together!!

They are re-establishing dominance, they unshaved one sees the newly shaved male as an entirely different male cat in his territory. Your other male isn't seeing your other cat and thinking, 'oh whiskers got a haircut.' But recognizing their is a new male around. Give them a few days/weeks to work it out and they adjust and they establish their dominance.

They both are getting up in age they will do this until his hair grows back or sees hes not no treat. Why did you shave your cat why not just brush every night before going to bed?

not normal 1 cat is not recognizing the other.
