Did the dentist who extracted the tooth have a difficult time with the extraction. Is it possible that he left something behind and this is causing your pain. Or maybe there is a hair line fracture in your jaw that does not show up on the ex-rays. I feel for you. I know what it is like to be in chronic pain. I had a root canal done in 2005 and the pain was constant for 14 months before it healed. Dentists could not tell me why either. Did you see any specialists? Funny, they're all specialists who don't really know what's going on. Good Luck to you.

It sounds like your jaw may have been injured when the tooth was pulled. Don't give up just because doctors haven't found anything wrong. If you're in pain, there IS SOMETHING WRONG and you need to keep on until the problem is found. I had a wisdom tooth extracted by an oral surgeon (I was not awake) and for days I couldn't open my mouth to eat. The pain was horrible and nothing relieved it. I went back twice and he couldn't find any problem. But I was in pain and didn't give up. Finally he anesthetized me and opened the gum. I had a pocket of pus (30 mg) which didn't show up until he re-opened the surgical site. The pain relief was immediate. Pain is a warning that something is not right. It's just a matter of searching till the problem is found.

Could very well be TMJ. Which can cause severe pain and not easily relieved. Since they pulled the rear tooth your jaw may be mis aligned and that's why you get some relief when you hold your mouth open a certain way. Continue to see another dentist or Doctor until someone gets it figured out.
You could also request a mouth guard from your dentist to hold your mouth a certain way while you sleep.
Go to a different dentist than the one that did the original extraction. Sometimes Dr's don't want to admit they may have screwed something up. get your dental records and see someone else.

Muscles that control the jaw (and lots further away that refer pain) can have knots (trigger points) causing the muscle to be tight. Many times this is what is really going on.
The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies explains completely, read it - very useful.
For now start rubbing anywhere it is sore on your head (not just your face) and neck (I'll bet it goes into your shoulders and back as well) preferably in the direction the muscle goes, 6 -12 times per session, 6 times a day.

It sounds a bit like TMJ. I had that and it was so painful I cried when I had to eat. Check this out and see if it sounds right.

Some of the most common TMJ symptoms include:
*
• Headaches (often mimicking migraines), earaches, and pain and pressure behind the eyes
*
• A clicking or popping sound when you open or close your mouth
*

Pain brought on by yawning, opening the mouth widely or chewing
*

• Jaws that "get stuck," lock or go out
*

• Tenderness of the jaw muscles
*

• A sudden change in the way the upper and lower teeth fit together.

This has to be corrected by a dentist and that might be why the doctors haven't figured it out.

have they done x-rays? mri? cat scan? i had this happen about 5 years ago finally dr. ordered mri and i had had a hairline fracture from the tooth extraction and it didnt heal right and they had to do surgery and put pins in my jaw which meant wiring it shut for six weeks after so it could heal... may not be that it could also be that you have tmj and its causing your tendons in your jaw on that side to swell.... regardless ask a dentist or even a dr to run more tests...... hope this helps

Sounds like TMJ for sure. You need to see an orthodontist. They can evaluate you for a bite splint or possible braces to correct the bite, which often onsets this problem. TMJ pain can be intense and often overlooked. Good Luck

Could have damaged your sinuses. I had a wisdom tooth that the doctors had to shatter the tooth to pull it cause he was afraid that if he pulled it out without shattering it he might tear my sinuses. So have that checked out.
