I recently got an expander put on my top jaw and on the right side of my upper mouth the gum just started to swell about 2 days ago. I've had the expander on for about a month now. What should i do? or what could I do to make it go down? and why is it swelling?

Angelia J... gave you some good advice... warm salt water 3 times a day and seeing your dentist or orthodontist...

Since,... you recently got the expander on your top jaw and on the right side of your mouth... it seems that your dentist or orthodontist should examine the swollen gums...

He or she will check for deposits of bacteria around the teeth...and your dentist or orthodontist will check if the expander is causing the problem... Once the dentist or orthodontist has examined your gums... he or she will tell you how to continue care at home...

Oral hygiene to prevent gum disease is the same as treatment to prevent tooth decay. Ideally, the mouth needs to be cleaned after every meal. More realistically, a thorough cleansing before going to bed may minimize the chances of gum disease.

Dentist suggest brushing teeth with a soft-bristled brush.

Gentle movements within the crevices dislodge decay-causing material, while firm strokes over the teeth remove plaque....

Flossing is recommended to clear plaque from between teeth. After brushing and flossing, vigorously rinsing the mouth with an antiseptic mouthwash... containing antimicrobials (substances that kill bacterial) such as Listerine...this antiseptic mouthwash can help eliminate bacteria formation...

Once your dentist checks the inflamed gums... and makes sure the reason for your inflammation has been resolved... good oral hygiene practices should control the problem...

Good luck...

Rinsing your mouth with warm salt water has a healing effect.

The expander is foreign to your body and may take time for your mouth to adjust to it. You may have some food debris in there as well. Make sure you clean your mouth as well as you can, rinse with warm salt water 3 times a day and call the orthodontist or dentist just to make sure. They might want you to pop in for a quick look.

its bcoz they have banded ur tooth and it will be impinging on the gums. another reason is if there is food deposition gums swell due to inflammation..for this u can take a course of antibiotics(preferably mild) and along with that u can massage the gums with any gum astringent where its swollen. and keep ur oral hygiene clean till the termination of treatment..
