My son got a set of Leap Frog Fridge Phonics from his Grandpa. These magnets and the little sound box that came with them have been awesome. My little guy isn't even 3 and he can name most of the letters and make the sound!! Really a great gift and even though it makes noise it isn't annoying.

How about a personalized book? Kids love to hear their name in the storyline. Go to this website http://www.tlc-expressions.com They have lots of titles like Sesame Street, Three Little Pigs, Mother Goose, Teddy Bear Land, Dinosaur Land, Scooby-Doo, Looney Tunes, Sports titles and so many more. Check it out - they're very reasonably priced, and make a wonderful & unique gift... Good Luck!

My son is a year and a half old and he loves playing with his little champs sports center. It sits low to the ground and he can drop a ball through a hoop (they can also grow into this toy). He loves doing that. Also fisher price little people, like the farm set. And as someone else mentioned the leap frog fridge farms are great. My son loves that as well.

i don't know how big your social circle is but I guess he won't go without on the toys front this birthday even if you don't buy them! For my daughter's 1st birthday we bought a charm bracelet and plan to get her a new charm each birthday, you could maybe do something similar but more boyish.
Also when she was born her grandparents had a star named after her which stays in the record book forever and we've got it nicely framed - I thought that was a lovely idea.

He is at the perfect age to start learning. So I would suggest anything that has to do with learning. For my daughter's 1st birthday she got toys like the leapfrog lilly (they have a boy one) it sings the numbers 1-10. she can now count to 10. There are so many educational toys now it will not be that hard to find something he will love!

there are so many options out there. I personally plan to give my daughter books for her first birthday. She's 7 months now and loves touch and feel books. I would choose a book on a topic that he enjoys. Bedtime books are good such as Goodnight Moon, Love you forever, Guess how much. Reading a favorite book at night not only aids in language acquistion but it creates memories that will last for your lifetime and his.

I would take a look at the following website - fisher-price.com
They list all their toys & educational games by the child's age.
I found with both my children that their toys/games were the best, especially for quality.

Go to the toy store and look for toys appropriate for 12m +, that way you know its designed for his age, and he'll love it! 1 y/olds usually love lots of music/sounds and bright flashy lights with colourful buttons. Hope this helps!

a bright colored bouncy ball or push toy with sounds and music...

all my kids love the leapfrog push toy it plays music and abcs and my 1 year old got a red bouncy ball with spiderman and absoutley loves it.
another one of their favorites is the new drop and roar dinasour.
you can drop a ball in and it makes sounds and lights as the ball slides down.
