I am getting married this July and we are having a Hawaiian luau themed wedding. We want our guest to wear Hawaiian attire...ie~Hawaiian shirts, shorts, dresses, etc. Is it okay to ask our guests to wear this on the invites? I'm thinking of putting a note on the bottom of the invitation that says, "Hawaiian attire requested". Is it okay to request your guests wear specific clothing?

Thanks to all of you who answered. I'm not even going to pick a best answer because you all answered the same and I'm glad to know that it's cool to request this. Thanks again for all your help!!!!!!!! Aloha!!

People actually prefer to have an idea of what to wear. We're having a military wedding so we put "Military dress encouraged" on our invitations.

Yes, But you may need to remember that not everybody will be able to find Hawaiian Attire. But it is ok to Request your guest to wear Specific Clothing! I think that is a great idea and a great way to get people exited for a different type of wedding to look forward too! Have a great wedding.

I like the wording that Amber used... "encouraging" them to wear hawaiian attire just sounds more positive than "requesting".

Yes, it is - in fact, it used to be required. Most guests appreciate being informed as to what the expected attire will be, especially when you have a somewhat untraditional wedding - that way they don't end up feeling over/under dressed

I think it's totally fine. I would say something like "Hawaiian attire requested....or encouraged...or something to that effect" This way it sounds like you are asking and not demanding.

Yes, even to the point of 'requesting' they don't wear certain inappropriate attire that they may think up. But it sounds just fine what you suggest.

I don't see why not, People say Black tie required or formal attire required so go for it. Sounds like fun!

Heck yeah! Why woundn't people want to? It sounds fun! There is nothing wrong with politely asking that, as you have indicated.
