My husband is looking at taking a job at Fort Benning. Is this a nice base to live on or no? Has anyone ever lived in the housing there? We have two small kids and are also wondering about schools around there and things to do. Thanks.

Ok the public schools there suck...majorly! I've heard good things about the DOD schools but we always lived off base. I had friends who lived on base. They hated that. The housing really looks like crap in alot of places and according to my friends there were some bug issues (but it is in GA and there are bug problems everywhere!) If you get an apt stay far far away from Whisperwood. There are too many reasons to state on here but it was like living in hell to be at that place. I'd recommend Greystone at the Oaks (staff was really good and the neighbors were nice BUT the school down the street was not so great) When we left they were building some new complexes and subdivisions so you could probably find something ok. As far as stuff to do...well you have the basic stores to shop at (alot of new shopping centers) there's a lot of restaurants, museums, movie theaters, etc and then if you go about 40 miles north to Pine Mtn there's all kinds of things to take kids to (Callaway Gardens, Animal Safari, etc) There's alot of parks and a river walk that's several miles long. All in all it's not too bad but it's hotter than hell in the summertime and so you have to be careful about having kids out sometimes.

My best friend's husband was stationed there twice. My friend liked it so much, she settled there to raise her kids when he retired. She's still there. :)
