Texas is about to pass a new law that would make corporal punishment on a child for any reason at home or in school a crime.I have my own beliefs on hitting, spanking a child(or whatever you want to call it).Do you think that Texas should be able to make corporal punishment a crime? Should parents be able to discipline their kids without facing jail time?

My fears is that parents will stop corporal punishment for a month or so and thier kid/kids will push the wrong button someday and the parent will explode and seriously hurt and possibly kill the kid/kids.Most parents who hit only knows hitting as discipline.Take that away and I think they will snap.Gonna be alot of foster kids and dead kids.I hope Im wrong.

corporal is practiced here in the Phils although there are some laws restricting it. I myself was undergone that when i was little. It was not as bad as it sounds though. Some children canot understand good reasoning for them to behave so a little pain has to be inflicted to remind them. But that does not mean im pro-corporal punishment or anything. My point is just to use it as a last resort for children and done very little. However there should be very strict rules as not to inflict it upon adults.

Your statement seems to be incorrect. There is a California legislator who proposed a bill which would make it a misdemeanor for parents to spank a child three years or younger. A misdemeanor seldom if ever involves jail time.

Here's a quote: "If the bill passes and is signed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lieber said it would make California the first in the nation to have a no-spanking law."

Lieber is the legislator previously mentioned.

IN TEXAS??? I have never been there, but from what I understand, if they do that, they had better start building new prisons, like a few hundred thousand of them, lol. I am surprised that a state in the south would be trying to do this. I understand here in California, someone bringing this up. Just remember they did a poll in one of the more liberal part of California (the bay area). 92% said they do NOT support a ban.

Gosh if thats how the people feel in California, what do you think they will do in Texas. It will be a riot out there.

BTW, I am very much in support of the right to spank when necessary.

Good Luck

i am completely in agreement with the law. No one has the right to hit another person regardless of age. I know that corporal punishment has been practised by generations and that there are many of you who believe that if you don't spank your children will walk all over you. It isn't true. There are ways of disciplining your child and teaching them to respect themselves and others without physical punishment. Effective parenting does not include spanking. Although it is unfortunate the government has to pass a law to protect children, it is a neccesity.

CA is wanting to pass a law that no child under 3 will be able to be spanked. I don't feel that the government should be able to tell how to discipline your child unless it turns into a situation of abuse. I can tell you this if they think prisons are over populated now see what happens when these kids know that you can't touch them!

I'm in Australia & here is it illegal for you to hit your child above the waist. You may only "lightly" spank them (if only absolutely necessary) with an open hand on the back of their thigh. I believe that a good smack never hurt anyone (I had plenty as a kid & I turned out ok).

I don't think parents should be thrown in jail for spanking (in general), nor do I think they should have their kids taken away. I am however IN FAVOR of legislation against spanking. I think children have as much right to the dignity of their persons and safety as any adult. I also know from experiece that it is entirely possible to discipline in a nonviolent way.

I think, instead of jail time, though, I think classes on disciplining w/o violence would be better. Most parents who spank were spanked themselves and do not know HOW to discipline w/o it.

While I am generally not for legisilating every last thing, I do think having anti-spanking legilaion SENDS A MESSAGE. Many years ago, it was socially acceptable to smack around one's spouse. NOw it is called spousal abuse. Perhaps, one day, spanking will be seen the same way.
