I have purchased a dog house and have filled it with layers of fleece and a thick dog bed to for a stray cat that I have been feeding. I have also covered the doorway and protected it from the wind. Will that be sufficient to help keep the cat safe tonight with -6 temp and wind chill advisory of -15 degrees?

Obviously, the cat would be better inside, but I use to have strays by my old house and did the same thing, they were fine, I think they get use to the cold poor things. Straw works well too, you can put it on the bottom...you are sweet to care for our furry friends...god bless ya!

Yes that will work very well, the freezing wind/air temp and having it's paws etc stick to the ground and loss of body heat are the worst concerns and you have fixed all that. As long as the cat will go inside, it will do very well. It would be like being a barn cat but with softer bedding and less noise! I'm sure it will be very happy and will have no problems retaining it's body heat with the set up you described. Just make sure that the door is not facing the wind but away from it.

I feel for those poor stray animals, so many people will just dump them out like they are trash. I think the cats usually will find someplace to burrow into for winter, like a hollow tree or under some kind of structure. They also have a habit of piling up in groups for warmth and guess that helps a little, the snow banks in Canada will provide some shelter for them as well. Their water intake must come either from snow, or maybe the moisture from the prey they are able to catch and eat. And unfortunately, I am sure that many perish from hunger and the cold.

It should be sufficiant but I would include a big warm blanket for him/her to curl up under..maybe some newspaper since it holds heat well.
You're very sweet for taking care of this cat .
I took care of a stray as well and I worried about her being outdoors in the freezing cold.( you must be from Canada too! ;o) ) I had a dog and there was NO way she was letting this cat in HER house!! ) She's still around ( a neighbour takes great care of her now!) and she's fine. Cat's will find a safe, warm place to sleep on thier own but it's always nice for them to know that there is somewhere that's provided for them.

Your wee stray kitty THANKS YOU!!!
Hugs to you!

I had this problem once. I put the bedding in a garage shelf, but what I did was get a shop light or some light and put it over the bedding so the cat could stay warm with the light and warmth of the light all night. It worked. You could put a light in the dog house.

Also, they make a cat heating pad that you can plug in that they can lay on that keeps them warm.

Good question and so good of you to care.

Have you considered getting a humane trap?.... you'd need to check it frequently but you could bring it in from the cold. It clearly won't be the cats favorite idea... and it may not be tame enough to let out in your house, but I'm sure it would forgive you if you let it sleep in your garage and gave it some water.

The cat may or may not survive. I pray that it does survive that is very cold. I guess there is no way you can put the cat in the garage or in the house? Poor baby.

It will probably survive; however, cats do not like to be cold. I am assuming that you are talking -6 F? That is v. cold.
Try to find a good home for kitty.
