What exactly is it? I just bought a 57" TV that is a hdtv. I have direct tv has my sat provider. Direct tv wants 100 dollars for a HDTV receiver and 6 bucks a month. How does HD work exactly and is it worth it? Do local channels offer it on network programming? I think I want to get it, but dont want to waste money if its not that great. I heard football is outstanding on it.

HDTV is 3-4 times larger and sharper picture. According to a friend who has it, you can see features on the faces of people in the stands on TV sports games.

You can get BROADCAST HDTV with an antenna if you are somewhat close to the station.

HDTV either works or it doesn't. It's on or off. No snow. No bends. No rolls. No noise to the sound. No buzz.

HDTV may also pick up DTV (digital TV) which is regular quality TV on the newere digital broadcasting stations.

Regular broadcast TV, like you are used to, ends in 2008 and is replaced by DTV and HDTV

You will want to upgrade your DVD in another year or so to HD DVD or Blu Ray, but wait to see who wins the race!

Your current SAT box will work with your set and give you very nice pictures image quality, but not as good as HDTV.

Play around and see if you get get local broadcast stations doing HDTV or DTV and see how that looks. CBS, FOX, NBC and ABC all broadcast sports in HDTV.

I used to sell cable for rogers, High def is great, coolest thing ever when you first get it... Its kinda like watching a dvd vs VHS. So this is what you do, first off always rent HD boxes. Your provider will have a plan don't sign a contract or make a verbal agreement because your not sure if you want to keep it. don't buy a box, if you rent it you get free upgrades if a new box comes out and if something happens to it they will replace it. Second you should of got some sort of promotion when you bought the tv for free HD for 2 or 3 months. I would check into the store to see if you missed out on any promo's. So see how much free stuff you can get try it out and if you like keep it if not no biggy your not stuck with anything. Oh and all the programing that you get in hi def is channels you already have. You don't get extra channels. my website is www.makeyourmillionforfree.50megs.com

If you bought a late-model large-screen HDTV, it should have a built-in digital tuner (ATSC tuner). You can use that to receive off-the-air HDTV broadcasts, and it won't cost you anything (if you have an antenna). If you want HDTV from DirecTV, you will need to get their receiver. However, you do not need to subscribe to their "HD package" ($6/mo). You will get local stations and any HD version of a premium channel (such as HBO or Showtime) if you already have that. The HD receiver will replace the one you have, and won't cost extra unless you want to keep the old receiver as well.
