Fear is only part of the motivation for right behavior (at least in Roman Catholicism, the religion with which I have the most familiarity). Good works are also supposed to be done for their own sake, because they are the right thing to do. Not that I am a great defender of religion, but really, get to know your opponent a little better before you level a broad accusation at it and get roundly spanked by those who know their religious doctrine better than you. If you want to have any chance at all of raising valid questions in the minds of the faithful, then ask them something they won't brush aside as easily as this question.
Plus, it really isn't a bad thing to adhere to a norm of ethical behavior - even a non-believer such as myself thinks that's a good way for us all to get along. We *should* do good things for their own sake and for the sake of the people we do them for - I don't need a god to tell me that.
