Great start! The recommendation is at least 30 minutes of exercise 3 times a week. Add another workout session to your step class and you are on your way. Try adding some strength training to tone up your muscles.
What you should / could eat - you need to be looking at your entire diet. You should be eating enough calories to fuel your activity level (at least 1200 per day... more when you add exercise) - as long as this is a reduction of your previous calorie intake, you will lose weight. These numbers get tricky, so focus on getting the food pyramid recommendations, and get used to counting calories. Focus on the one habit, then tweak your calorie intake later. (Stop drinking your calories to start - there's a lot of empty calories in sports drinks, pop, smoothies, fake juices, etc - best to stick to water, coffee, tea, and milk until you get the calorie counting down.)
Also, if you carefully watch your portion sizes (measure them out if you have to), very little is off the table as to what you can eat.
