I often write to soldiers overseas to thank them for their service. I'll write about current events, or tv, or the weather. One asked for a play-by-play of the superbowl, because he wouldn't be able to see it. If you aren't writing to one already, you can ask if there's anything that he wants to hear about from home. Usually they'll write back. Be sure to write your address on your letter. I use anysoldier.com.

Try the USO, and also I believe Oprah and/or Dear Abby has sites that help you to do so.
Topics? Local news. Personal entertaining stories. Ambitions. Ask questions. Look up interesting topics online, and discuss them. Talk about your art.
