i have a 10 week old dog that i got from the humane society about 3 weeks ago. the dog eats well and seems to be growing fine. a few days ago i noticed he was looking thinner. today my wife said she laid around all day and she thought she wasnt feeling well. tonight the dog vomited in the hallway and when i started cleaning it up i noticed what i think is worms. it looked like spaghetti only thinner and some of them were pretty long and moving around. i thought worms were very small and you could only see them in the dogs stool.what kind of worms could they be? i immediately went to wal-mart and bought dewormer for the dog and my cat and gave it to them exactly as the instructions said. i am confused. can worms make a dog sick that quickly? she looked very healthy a couple of days ago. i am very concerned for my dog and would like some advice. should i take her to the vet tommorrow or wait a couple of days and see how she is feeling? will the wormer give her diarhea or make her vomit?

Your pup needs to be taken to the vet as soon as you are able. Your dog has roundworms which can be transferred to humans. If you have noticed any particles in her bedding or around her rectum that resemble flat dried pieces of rice, then she may have tapeworm also. She has had this for awhile now and has reached the point where she needs medical attention. She can get this from contact with or ingesting feces from other animals infected with the worm but by seeing her age, she probably ingested this from her mother's milk. Over the counter wormers are worthless. Please do not forget to mention to the vet that you gave her some medicine already. Even though over the counter wormers are of poor quality they are still potent and you do not want to run the risk of an overdose. She may vomit and or have diarrhea which may expell some of the worms so prepare to clean up a bit . Also mention that you have other animals in the household as they will need to be treated as well. Also take in a sample of what you found just to be certain. Don't play around, this is deadly if not treated properly. Best of luck to you!

Yes a vet visit would be smart. It's sounds like maybe round worms. They are long like spaghetti. You're right they are more likely to be found in stool. Your dog is the exception. Save a couple of the worms in a plastic bag, to let your vet see what you're talking about. Your vet might want to get a stool sample just to make sure that's the only kind of parasite your pet has. There's many more! Your pup might also need a more broad spectrum dewormer, that kills many different types. Pups can get very dehydrated easily from vomiting & diarrhea. Do him a favor & take him to the vet.

It is VERY likely that is it worms. I would say that you did do the right thing by getting a dewormer. However, your puppy should get a check up from a veterinarian anyways. Normally, when you take a puppy to a vet, the deworm them as a precautionary. It is not uncommon to deworm puppies monthly for up to six months. Humane Societies, unfortunately aren't the cleanest of kennels. I wouldn't be surprised if the puppy got the worms from there. I would still take the puppy to the vet if I were you. Remember, sometimes the medications offered at pet stores isn't as 'potent' as the strengths veterinarian offices have.

Best of Luck, and congrats on your new addition!

Yes you should take the dog to the vet. I would also let them know you have a cat and have them give you something for it to. I would also put both your animals on heart-guard which protects them for all worms then they won't get them back again and you won't have to be worried about their health. Also be careful cleaning up after both because some worms that animals get can pass on to humans make sure when you clean up after them to wash your hands good.

It is common for puppies to get worms. However then can be fatal. You need to take your dog to the vet, since you need to know if it is hook worms or round worms. Worms can make a dog anemic to the point that they need transfusions.

Worms will make your dog vomit and have diarhea. Take her to vet tomorrow.

Good Luck

Yes, you should take her to the vet. This is a serious situation, and needs your pet's doctor's attention fast. Be sure to describe the worms to the vet to get the best type of medication for her. Worms can potentially lead to the harming of your dog, so you should take her to the vet. As for now, just comfort her as much as you can until you get her checked up.

Dogs can vomit from an overgrowth of worms. You need to go to your vet tomorrow and get a dewormer from them. They will tell you the proper schedule to deworm your dog. You need to deworm more than once and normally it needs to be done a week or 2 apart. Take the dewormer you gave and a stool sample with you to the vet. Your dog may have more than one type of worm. She may need a different type of dewormer on top of the one you gave. Talk to your vet.

You need to get this puppy to a vet immediately! Yes, this dog has worms and yes, in some instances they can kill! Walmart wormers are junk. You need to get a wormer from a vet, the over the counter stuff is garbage and simply won't work. You also need to make sure this pup get's her shots, all of them!

Many kennel puppies end up with Parvo which is deadly and very very contagious to other dogs.

Please, get her to the vet tomorrow!

take the puppy and the worm medication you gave her (so the vet will know exactly what it is).

i would either take the dog back to the humane society (they shouldn't have released her without proper care and treatment) and have them do it for free or see if they will pay for another vet to do it.

make sure the dog isn't getting snacks out of the cats litter box

The dog could have tape, round, hooked or whip worms. I would not wait. I would take her to the vet or if you have a vet as good as mine call them, explain to them as you have here and hopefully the vet would let you come in and pick up the medication. I would call as soon as the office opens in the morning. Good luck and I hope your dog is feeling much better real soon!!!!
