You don't teach cats to swim. They either like water or they don't. As a general rule, cats hate water. Most of them WILL swim if they are put in the situation to do it, but I don't suggest it. You usually have to introduce the kitten to water at a very young age or they hate it. Even then, it is no guarentee. Hope this helps.

All cats can swim, but they really hate to do so. The only species of cat that like water are tigers and jaguars. There is a domestic cat called a Turkish Van, which sometimes enjoy getting in the water. Otherwise, just forget this idea of teaching your cat to swim. He'll probably hate you for it.

You can teach your cat to swim. Teaching it to like swimming is probably the hard part. Certain breeds are more likely to be more willing to swim (like Bengals). Some cats though, will really not like the water, and there's probably no good reason to go through all the trouble it would take to get them to swim (and to like it).
Get them used to the water nice and slow. Probably the bath tub is a good place to start. Work with the cat in small time increments (5-10 minutes) often - preferably daily. Reward them with food. Be nice and calming to the cat. Don't just chase them into a corner, pick them up, and toss them in. Hold them in your arms in an area close to the water so they are good and calm. Dip their paws in to get started. After a while, incorporate play into it, toss a ball or some toy that they chase after into the water and let them paw at it. Encourage them to jump in the water after it and eventually they will. Get started this way and eventually start using deeper water. If you have a water area that will require your cats to swim accross it (or to something inthe middle) in order to get a toy or food, that will probably be a good method.

Unless you have introduced the cat to water as a kitten, and very gently at that, don't even think about it. If you never heard the sound a a cat in distress, its a sound you'll never forget.
