You should file an amended return right away to correct the error. If you wait, you might be subject to huge fines and other problems.

No, you shouldn't wait until next year. You can and should file an amended return now. You may be entitled to an additional refund if your wife had taxes withheld for an amount greater than your tax liability. If you used tax preparation software, such as TurboTax, you can file an amended return using the software. Or, you can take the W-2 and copies of your previously filed return to any tax preparer. If you want to try it on your own, you can go to www.irs.gov and download the form 1040-X and instructions. Just type 1040-X in the search box on the IRS site.

You need to file a form 1040-X which is the amended tax form. This form cannot be filed electronically. You must mail it. If you are unfamiliar with it I recommend having a tax professional do it for you. If you go to one of the tax services like H&R Block, be sure to ask the preparer if they are familiar with filling out the frorm. Not all preparers are trained in filling them out. You can file it anytime within 3 years of the due date of the original return but you should get it done right now. Good luck.

You file an amended return on a form 1040X, showing the amounts from the original return, the amounts from the corrected returns, and the differences.

Nope - go to the IRS site and they will walk you through how to file an amended tax return. This is not as uncommon as it seems. Since you are doing it so early, it is unlikely there will be a penalty. They have a "Great Computer - Denver" that matches the SSN's and will in due season report back to you. It took me about 6 months.

You MUST file an amended return using Form 1040X. You cannot carry it over to next year. Hang on to your refund! There's a good chance that tax will be due with the 1040X.

Amend the return. Easy process. It just says, "Oops! There's an error. Let's fix it."
All 2006 income MUST be on a 2006 return.
