You can go to http://www.portableapps.com and download those programs. They are designed to be run off a USB key, but you can run them right off your computer without installing them first if you prefer. Then, if you want to get rid of them, just delete the folder and poof... they are gone.

PortableApps has OpenOffice.org (an office suite), GIMP (a photo editor), Firefox (web browser), Thunderbird (email), Gaim (instant messaging), AbiWord (word processor), and many others.

"any great programs" is a bit vague - so we don't know just what you WANT to do!

Many versions of Linux - an alternative operating system to Windows - and which many claim to be 'great' - will run without you having to install them - this is called a 'Live CD' version.
