You can actually start learning how to fly DURING high school through the civil air patrol if you live near an air force base. You also don't have to be 18 to take private flight lessons so you might want to take a few while you're in school to see if it's really something you would like.
You can also become a pilot through the military (I think navy, air force and marines all use pilots), or there are a lot of colleges (both community colleges & universities) across the country with commercial aviation programs.

The military air corps is an option to get 'free' pilot training, but in nearly every case you'll need to be a college graduate. However, I believe the Army still has a warrant officer program for certain pilot duties that does not require a college degree.
Otherwise pony up the bucks and go to a flight school as a civilian.

Of path you have got to whole high tuition. You could even need to complete institution, and get a degree from a institution/institution. Becoming an airline pilot isn't best about flying. You ought to have particular degree of figuring out of Physics, arithmetic, and Meteorology, and couple of alternative stuff. So it's better that you just entire high tuition, and even believe about going to tuition. Do you recall the recent US Airways Flight 1549 incident, the place the pilot landed the aircraft in water, and saved everyone's existence that used to be on board. Good he him self not handiest completed excessive school, and obtained a bachelor's degree, he also has 2 Masters measure. So yeah it is major that you've got just right schooling before you turn out to be a pilot.

You could start taking after-school and/or holiday jobs as starting to save up for a private pilot's lisence would be a good starting block.
Contact your nearest aeroclub-flight school to enquire about possible grants for juniors. Lessons are charged on an hourly basis, so once you've saved up a little, you could take spariodic lessons, just to give you an idea. However don't launch into a full training course this way.
One thing you can do right now is to prepare the theoritical pilot's exam, it dosen't cost much, and you can get a lot of help on internet sites (eg. the last exam's corrected questions, and lots of aides to your manual.) Whatever you choose to do, don't give up. If you've caught the aviation virus, stay infected-it's wonderful! Good Luck!

Get a degree in law, become a lawyer, get rich, then if you feel like being poor again, get your licenses, buy a plane, build some flight time, and get a job making 20 grand a year flying a baron for a small cargo company. No seriously, join the military. I am a pilot, and I am trying to join the military, because they pay better, let you fly cooler planes, and when you get out, you can get whatever pilot job you want.

There are a number of ways to become a professional pilot. One obvious one is the military, but it is difficult to get a spot. The second is a college or university like Western Michigan University, Embry Riddle, North Dakota University, etc. There are also companies that run accelerated programs to take you all the way through your ATP in a (reletivly) short period of time.
With the airline world being in the state it is it may be a good idea to go to a university so you come out of it with a degree, just incase flying dosent pan out.

If you want to be like a fighter pilot, remember it's like trying to be a professional athelete. Many people try and only a few make it as it costs millions to train a fighter pilot.
Also commercial pilots are in a very tumultuous profession with so many airlines in financial trouble.
On Edit: To become an astronaut, you have to excel both academically and physically. There are too many people trying for a very few slots.

Join the military. USN, USAF, are probably the best. The price of training and the cost of plane rental will put a big hurt on your wallet. Besides that, just try and rent a F-16. After you are discharged, you can usually get a job with an airline, or UPS, or Fedex. You'll have your license, and a lot of experience.

some post secondary institutions train you to become a commercial pilot, however it depends on where you are from and the programs that schools offer. you will need to get a private pilots license first though.
