They are like normal tattoos. They don't "wear out", but they will fade with time. This will fade even faster than most tattoos because it is always in the sun. I would really talk to some people who have done it before taking the plunge. My mother had hers done and said it was more painful than giving birth.

The inside of the lip is always moist and the tattoo isn't really able to heal properly, they do fade quickly and need touch ups. I wouldn't recommend getting anything that you couldn't live with for the rest of your life though. My friend is in the military and he wanted a "moto" tattoo...he got USMC on the inside of his lip and it's faded a lot.

i just got one just over a week ago, and i'll tell you that it depends with everyone.

my brother and i got them together and mine is still in perfect condition, but the ink in his is kinda bleeding (ya know, looking kinda smeared, not literally bleeding) and so he's gonna go and get that touched up.

if you wanna get one, you should ask the tattoo artist if they offer one free touch-up, just in case. if it starts to come out, it usually takes about 2 to 3 touch-ups to make it stay.

it also depends on how deep the tattoo artist goes. because the more on the surface of the lip it is, the faster it could possibly fade.

and don't worry about the pain. yes, it hurts, but it's not excruciating and it doesn't take that long to do the tattoo.
