Yesterday evening, my cat Sarah was sitting in my lap when she suddenly jumped onto the floor and began meowing and running around.

I attempted to calm her down, but she continued to run around an cry. Several seconds latter, she ran behind my chair and, as I walked around to see if she was alright, she made a sound that can be best described as a loud "pop" and stuff came out of both of her ends simultaneously.

Following this, she gave me a rather sheepish look and ran into "her" closet. After I confirmed that she was not in any distress I left her alone and she eventually emerged from the closet.

She didn't appear to have any problems throughout the night and seems to have not had any difficulty throughout the day. I've had Sarah for fifteen years and she has never done anything like this before.

I'm considering bringing her to the vet but really don't have the money to do so.

Is this normal or should I get Sarah to a vet???

Beyond the cost, I also worry about bringing Sarah to the vet due to the fact that she becomes distressed when in a moving vehicle. This distress is so severe that she has blacked out in the past and needs to be given a sedative. I'm sure that this can't be good for her.

Additionally, she just went to the vet in December.

With these worries in mind, I called the vet today [I asked the question yesterday] and he seems to think that, since she likes sugary things, she may have drunk soda or eaten something with yeast. Since he says cats can't burp, the pop was likely the release of the resulting stomach gases.

I was concerned for Sarah's health but also didn't want to subject her to an unnecessary car ride or incur the unnecessary expenses.

As for her age, she may be 15, but she can still bring me all manner of critters and jump six feet to my window sill to signal that she wants to be let in.

I know a vetinarian is rather expensive these days but Sarah is and old cat and The POP and both ends drama doesn't sound very normal. It could be bladder and bowel problems that are very severe. Please take Sarah to the vet she may be dying. After all Sarah is 15 yrs old most cats don't live that long and for Sarah's sake better to be safe than sorry mate.

If Sarah is OK now then maybe it was something she ate. Keep a check on her and if she is still acting weird then she must go to the vet's.

Given Sarah's age the doctor can feel her insides and determine if she needs X-rays to find out the cause.

Also, if she is indoor and outdoor cat then maybe she ate something that really jolted her insides.

My cat age 14yrs was just OK until she stopped eating. That was a sign of her disease. She had never been sick before.

Cat's don't usually show any signs of distress even when they are in it. If they go into the closet and want to stay there it's time for vet help.

Keep an eye out as I know you will.

You should get Sarah to a vet. I understand cost is a concern, but any abnormal behavior, vomiting, or diarrhea could mean serious medical issues. With Sarah's age, she should definitely be examined by a vet. Good luck

My thought is with her age, that weird sound, and the fact that it was an isolated incident, you may be looking at an internal problem. I would probably take her in to have blood work done. The vet can screen for any abnormalties that have appeared.
You'll definantly want to watch her and make sure that she continues to eat & doesn't act really lethargic.

Please be a responsible pet owner. I understand better than anyone about money, but you should really get her to the vet. This is a very delicate age and it could be a number of things. She needs to be completely assessed. It is really good that she doesn't seem to have any problems now, but that doesn't mean anything. She really needs to be seen.

Well, when my cats "pop", its like a hairball, or they're gagging up puke. If Sarah only popped once then I dont think thats normal, but if she did it a bunch, then she probably just had to throw up. Fifteen is pretty old for a cat. : (

She needs to go to the vet, you took responsibility for her life when you brought her home, so you need to pay for any medical bills no matter what. She is relying on you to help her.
