My son sleeps a lot in all his subjects resulting to low grades. He is a smart kid but lately, due to his sleepiness, he does not participate and does not study well in class. He sleeps regularly and sleeps at 9PM each night. He is a homebody and prefers to play PS2 and computers during holidays and weekdays. He hates sports, but he tags along every sunday to play 9 holes of golf. He is 14 years old and in High School, has asthma - rarely, and is not under any medication, except for multi-vitamins and vit C (250 mg a day).

Does he need a neurologist or a phsychiatrist, or a psychologist?

Talk to your pediatrician first. They will be able to make a referral to the appropriate specialist. Your pediatrician will probably ask you about your son's sleeping habits on the weekends and school holidays-ie: does he sleep longer/later, etc. Is he sleepy when he is engaged in activities that he enjoys (like PS@2)....and so on.

As long as you are sure your son is getting the sleep he needs and is in fact going to bed at 9 pm then the best course of action is to make an appointment with your primary doctor. Explain the issue and your cause for concern. Most likely he will run blood tests and test his oxygen intake. Depending on the results your doctor may refer you to a specialist, perhaps even refer you to a sleep study center where your sons sleep pattern is monitored. I'm sure this is frustrating to all of you - I wish you all the best.

Teens need 9 or more hours of sleep each night. He may not be getting enough sleep. Be sure he has enough exercise during the day, but not too close to bedtime. He doesn't have to play sports--maybe walking or a half hour of DDR.
Teens also have a later clock than the rest of us. They like to go to bed later and get up later.
I'm also wondering if he is not getting enough deep sleep. Maybe he has sleep apnea. Your doctor can refer him to a sleep specialist.

I would advise that he undergo a good physical health evaluation, along with a psychological and/or neurological evaluation. If this behavior is new and not typical of your son then I would suspect that something is out of sync - but I can't say that with certainty. It may be of benefit to also have him participate in a sleep study to rule out a sleep disorder. Most of your larger hospitals offer this service. A psychologist can provide psycholgoical testing to rule out many types of impairments suffered by children, so this might be a route to take in order to rule out psychological impairment. Just by the information you provided my gut instinct would be to get him examined medically first.

The type of soecialist that your son needs to see, if he needs to see one at all, is not something that anyone here can tell you. Start by taking him to your family doctor, or if he has one, to his pediatrician. These doctors are more than capable of beginning an investigation of any type of problem, and then, if necessary, referring a patient to the apropriate specialist.

First find a family Doctor by calling any hospital.
Call the Dr. for appointment...take all the medication he uses.
Than Dr. will take his blood, urine test and may be some more test too!

I would take him to his family doctor to begin with. If you need a specialist, you'll need to be referred. Also, seeing a pscychiatrist may not be a bad idea.
