My school is offering a program to rock climb and the people are setting up in our gym. I am going and a few friends of mine are too. They say that you can get hurt real bad, and you need to be fit, strong, and flexible. Im barely any of those, and you don't NEED to be, but I am really afraid I'm going to get hurt. It is my first time, and I don't know if I should back out. I heard no one got injured last year and it is fun. I also have a small fear of heights. We are rock climbing, doing balancing activities and going in a rock climbing tunnel. PLEASE HELP!

Tiffany, you just have to do it. Focus on the task, not the "what ifs." I had a fear of heights as a kid. And I lived in a city of bridges and steep hills. Heck I still dislike heights. But I learned to swallow the rising bile and climb the ladder/walk the bridge/look down/...
In college I had the opportunity to do a high ropes course. I was nervous enough to vomit and scared enough to pee. I thought to myself what is the worst thing that could happen, beside vomitting or peeing? If I fall, maybe I break a bone or two. I'll mend. If I die, then I'll find out the answer to the ultimate question. There was nothing that could happen that would change my life more than doing this task right now. At the top of the first element (just 15 feet up) my legs were shaking so bad I couldn't do the transition to the next one. I forced myself forward and had a life altering experience.
There is nothing you can't do given the right tools. And you have them, right there. If you fall, laugh. If you need help/encouragement, ask for it.
And when you complete an activity, smile at the amazing thing you just did. Fear ain't nothing when set against your will.
Have a blast!
To quote one of my favorite singer/songwriters - "I'm gonna die with a smile if it kills me."

Yeah; go and try it. You will be given a harness and be tied in to a rope. So if you try a difficult climb and fall, the rope will catch you. Statistically, it is safer to rock climb than it is to drive your car. It doesn't matter if you are not the most flexible or the strongest. There is no competitor when you climb; it's just you versus gravity. Once you try it and learn to trust the ropes, you will find that your fear of heights will diminish. I was scared to death when I first tried it; and now I love it. I've been climbing for the past 5 years and have never seen nor had an accident. There is a freedom and excitement when you reach the top. I want to encourage you to give it a try.

The worst part of me is the height. I'm scared of tall things, other than that the people you are working with are trained and certifies to teach you about this. Indoor rockclimbing is not near as scarry as the outdoor stuff. Take your time, enjoy and don't do any more than you feel safe. But at least try!!! I did and I can't go up steps if I can see through them. Good luck!!
